Class description

Passport to Cooking: A Culinary Journey Around the

World (Grades 4-8)

Class Overview

In this hands-on cooking class, students will travel the world through food. Each week we will “visit” a

new country and explore its culture, traditions, and flavors by preparing a traditional dish from that

region.

Students will learn essential kitchen skills such as measuring, mixing, chopping, and following recipes

while also gaining a deeper appreciation for foods and cultures from around the globe.

As we travel from country to country, students will build their own “Passport to Cooking” binder filled

with recipes, country information, and fun facts. Each student will also receive a passport that we will

stamp as we visit new destinations throughout the semester.

Learning will go beyond the kitchen as students discover interesting cultural traditions, explore

geography, and develop curiosity about the world around them.

Above all, my hope is that students grow in confidence in the kitchen, develop a willingness to try new

foods, and experience the joy of creating and sharing meals together.

Coursework + Coursework at Home (Homework)

This class is primarily hands-on and experiential, so most learning will take place during our class time

together.

• Practice a recipe at home with their family

• Add notes or reflections to their country binder

• Share something interesting they learned about a country we studied

Understanding the Curriculum

Food is one of the best ways to explore the world. Throughout the year we will explore approximately

32 different countries while learning about:

• Traditional foods and ingredients

• Cultural traditions surrounding meals

• Geography and flags of each country• Unique cooking methods from around the world

Students will gradually build their binders as we move from country to country, creating a keepsake

cookbook and learning resource they can continue to use at home.

Classroom Supplies

• Students will be provided with a pencil

• Students will be provided with colored pencils

A 3-ring binder for recipes and country pages will be provided as part of the materials fee.

Parent Partnership, Student Expectations & Classroom Culture

Cooking is a collaborative activity, and students will work together to prepare and enjoy the recipes we

make. I strive to create a fun, welcoming, and encouraging environment where students feel

comfortable learning new skills and trying new foods.

Students are expected to:

• Listen carefully to instructions during cooking demonstrations

• Participate respectfully with classmates

• Follow kitchen safety guidelines

• Be willing to try new foods and experiencesMy goal is for students to leave class each week excited about what they created and eager to share

their experience with their families.
