American Sign Language - Level 1 (Functional Use)
Welcome to my ASL class at Ethos Academy! I am blessed you chose to join us!
This course is not graded, and does not require books or materials.
The $15 per semester material fee will be used towards materials provided by the teacher.
Students will engage in interactive activities and games while learning functional sign language in simplified ASL sentence structure.
Teacher will bring props and materials each week, as well as handouts for target language for that week's unit.
Teacher will model the target sentences prior to the activity and assist students in correctly forming the signs through the 5 parameters of signing (1. Handshape 2. Palm Orientation 3. Location 4. Movement 5. Non-Manual Markers/Facial Expressions). Then students will spend majority of the class playing games and engaging in fun activities while learning functional ASL.
Each week, teacher will choose a theme that introduces functional sentences.
Theme examples: Greetings and Introductions; School and Classroom; Likes and Dislikes; Food and Restaurants; Everyday Routines; Seasons and Weather.
Sentence examples: "It is time for school."; "It is sunny today."; "Do you like pizza?"; "Do you want to be friends?"
Expectations will be adapted according to each child's age and level of signing. Students with prior experience can practice their skills with each other during game and free time, and may be asked to assist other students.
Coursework will be added to Teach Hero each week, and students will be highly encouraged to practice while watching provided video links at home.
Students will be given handouts, so can bring a folder, binder, or some place to keep these handouts and use them both at home and in class.
Course Fees:
Fees for this 1-hour extracurricular foreign language course are due at beginning of each semester:
Tuition: $200 (per semester)
Material Fee: $15 (per semester)

Paid directly to Ethos Academy through the Learning Management System upon registration
Parents will enroll in classes and set up their chosen payment method (either pay in full or monthly) via Bank ACH
