Modern English Literature – Course Overview

This course is designed for 7th and 8th grade students and introduces them to influential works of modern literature written about the 1600s through the present day. Throughout the year, students will read 6–8 books representing a variety of genres, which may include historical fiction, a classic novel, an anthology of shorter works, and a biography. These texts will help students explore how literature reflects the historical and cultural contexts of its time.

Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:05–11:05 AM.

Students will develop essential reading and analysis skills by examining literary devices, vocabulary, and grammar concepts while strengthening their ability to write clearly and thoughtfully about what they read. Lessons will include discussion, guided analysis, and hands-on projects that connect literature to important historical events and ideas from the time periods in which the works were written.

Outside of class, students can expect 1–2 hours of coursework per week, which will include assigned reading and related assignments such as written responses, vocabulary practice, creative projects, and occasional research activities.

Because the course emphasizes comprehension and thoughtful engagement with the text, strong independent reading skills are encouraged. However, students are welcome to follow along in the physical book while listening to the audiobook, as this can be a helpful strategy for strengthening understanding and fluency.

The overall goal of the course is to help students build strong reading comprehension skills so they can thoughtfully analyze literature, make historical and thematic connections, and develop critical thinking about the texts they read.

Please note that this course will not cover spelling outside of paper editing and corrections.
