WELCOME TO SINGAPORE MATH, LEVEL 4 FOR GRADES 4 & UP!
Singapore’s Primary Mathematics, Standards Edition has proven to be a very popular and successful curriculum for homeschooling families. Although the math books are user friendly and easy to follow, two hours per week is not enough time to cover everything. This is not a student led curriculum; therefore, daily supervising, teaching, and correcting of homework by the parent is required. This is a non-religious course and may qualify for charter school reimbursements. Always check with your charter school regarding their reimbursement policies.
PLACEMENT TESTS REQUIRED: (Including current Singapore students)
To ensure your student is getting a healthy math challenge (not bored or frustrated), it is crucial they take the course matching their skills and abilities. To ensure your child is ready for Singapore Math 4, they should be able to successfully complete BOTH the 3A Placement Test AND the 3B Placement Test. Students who took Singapore this past year are also required to complete these tests to ensure they successfully mastered the material or are, at a minimum, able to fill the noted gaps over the summer. Students should also be fluent in their math facts.
To accurately assess where your student is, it is important that you NOT help them solve the problems on these tests; however, feel free to clarify any terminology that will help them understand what the question is asking. For example: List the factors of 24. You may need to remind them what a factor is. If your student cannot successfully complete the 3A AND 3B placement tests, they will likely struggle in Singapore 4 and should test for Singapore Math 3 to fill critical math gaps.
**IMPORTANT NOTE: There are various ages and grade levels in each of my Singapore Math classes. I cannot stress how important it is that they take the course matching their skills and abilities, not their chronological grade level. I also offer tutoring outside of Ethos for those who want that added support.
CLASSROOM & HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS:
This is a year-long, 2-day per week course. Weekly homework is required, and it is expected that you & your student spend time throughout the week working on and checking the homework prior to each class. This enables me to see exactly where the trouble spots are and allows me to quickly create a personalized and targeted time of review and support for your student.
Four exercises per week is expected; one exercise each day Mon. - Thurs. During class we will examine the concepts at hand, discuss all questions, clarify uncertainties, and work through various portions of the homework pages. We will participate in whole and small group math talks along with math challenges and games to help gain mastery of important skills. Because of everything we do in class, they oftentimes do not finish the exercises in class on T & Th. Therefore, Friday is our catch-up day for all unfinished work from the week.
