Civic Leadership and Career Exploration (8-12)

Tue 10:05am-11:05am

Class Description

Civic Leadership & Career Exploration is a year-long course that will review local, state & federal government, as well as develop the knowledge and understanding of students’ local communities and the many careers within them.

At the beginning of the school year, we will focus on the voting process, highlighting the presidential election and reviewing the three branches of government. Students will learn about the current Governor of Idaho and the responsibilities of the office. Students will also learn who their local representatives are, how to contact them, and how to attend a city council meeting.  For civic education to have meaning, students must be empowered to make a difference in their government.

The mission of this course is for students to gain perspective on how our communities function as a whole because of their many vital components; including local government, first responders, education, healthcare, business, infrastructure, and nonprofits. While learning about the components of their community, they will explore some of the many career opportunities within them.  Students will take quizzes to explore how their interests align with different careers and avenues of service. Students will learn how to find prospective career opportunities, write a resume, and learn professional etiquette.

At the beginning and completion of this course, students will answer the following questions:

  • What career and/or vocation do you want to have?
  • What are some special skills and interests you have that could benefit your community?
  • What is civic responsibility?

Class will begin at 10:05 AM on Tuesdays.  Students enrolled in this course will be enrolled for the entire school year.
