Course Description
Students will learn the basics of chemistry through reading, experimentation, discussion, and testing for understanding. We will look at classification of matter, atomic structure, spectroscopy, chemical bonding, molecular geometry, physical change, chemical change, stoichiometry, solutions, ideal gases, acid/base chemistry, reduction/oxidation reactions, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, and chemical equilibrium. The primary goal is that students will come to a greater appreciation of God's creation, value the complexity of the chemical world, understand core concepts essential for engaging in the chemistry/science community, and be able to identify and articulate key chemistry topics.
Course methodology (what you can expect from this course):
To meet the course objective, students will:
· Do experiments
· Write up the labs in a lab notebook according to a provided form
· Engage with lectures on each of the topics addressed in the curriculum
· Read the text, discuss, and bring questions
· Answer the study guide questions at the end of each section
· Take a test on the material at the end of each section
