Singapore Math 5

WELCOME TO SINGAPORE MATH, LEVEL 5 FOR GRADES 5 & UP!

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

This is a year-long, 2-day per week class (T & Th 1:05pm–2:05pm) and is part of the Upper Elementary Core Series. Singapore’s Primary Mathematics has proven to be a very popular and successful curriculum for homeschooling families. Although the math books are user friendly and easy to follow, two hours per week is not enough time to cover everything. Therefore, adult supervising and teaching is required. Please be sure your child completes the Singapore Primary Mathematics, U.S., Standards... Edition placement test (link attached) to ensure they are getting a healthy challenge by taking the level that matches their skills and abilities. We don't want them bored or overwhelmed. Be sure to go to the "Primary Mathematics (U.S., Standards...)" section of the placement tests. There is also information on how to use the tests to determine the best level for your student(s). Do not let your child’s chronological “grade level” determine which course to take. I have kids of all ages in each of my Singapore math classes. CLASSROOM & HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS:

Weekly homework will be assigned and it is expected that they spend time working each day to complete these pages by the end of the week. There will be time during every class period to examine and explore the concepts at hand and to fully discuss any questions they may have. We will participate in whole and small group math talks, challenges and games in order to review and gain mastery of various skills and conceptual understanding.  

Each level of Singapore Math is made up of two textbooks (A & B) with accompanying workbooks. We will be completing books A in the Fall (oftentimes running into early Spring) and books B in the Spring. This is a year-long, non-religious course and may qualify for charter school reimbursements. Always check with your charter for their specific rules and regulations about reimbursements. 

REQUIRED BOOKS & SUPPLIES:

• Fall Semester Texts: Singapore Primary Mathematics 5A Set w/ Teacher's Manual & Answer Key (Standards Edition).
  • If you are choosing not to purchase the Teacher's Guide, you will need to purchase the Answer Key(Standards Edition) in order to check their work each day.
  • If you are purchasing used books, please make sure your student has a clean, unused workbook. 
• Spring Semester Texts: Singapore Primary Mathematics 5B Set w/ Teacher's Manual & Answer Key(Standards Edition)
• 1 Composition notebook
• Dry erase pens - these are needed EVERY class period (whiteboards & erasers will be provided)
• 3” x 3” Post-it-Notes (used at home to record questions & concepts for further discussions in class)
• Mechanical pencils with Refills (no pencil sharpeners in the classroom)
• Protractor and ruler in inches, centimeters and millimeters (clear & small if possible)
• Supply box to keep these things together and organized in their backpack
• Additional supplies worth having: water bottle (sports lid to prevent spills), tissue and hand sanitizer

PAYMENT METHODS & SCHEDULE:

The cost of this course is $320/semester and will be paid directly to ETHOS. They will provide you with payment information and schedules. 

There is a $10 materials fee for this course to cover the cost of printing (drill & recording sheets, exit tickets and occasional activities such as math stations, games and riddles). These fees are due 8/5 for the Fall semester and 1/5 for the Spring semester. You can pay this via Venmo or check.
