Course Description:
This year, the Adventures in Literature course will visit some familiar favorites and also embrace some less familiar classics.  The theme woven through the novels will be addressing the "unlikely hero"! Students will look at a variety of genres including historic fiction, fantasy, the classic fairy tale, dystopian fiction and realistic fiction.  Too often, readers can get comfortable with one or two favorite authors or literary genres, but with our Adventures class, students grow in their appreciation of literature as we explore a wide range of genre types.

Students will keep a Reader's Journal for answering/asking questions from the novels, vocabulary building,  studying plot and character development along with identifying theme, conflict, and writer's purpose.   Additional activities include individual and group projects, class presentations, and investigative writing assignments.

Novel List:
"Summer of the Monkeys" by Wilson Rawls (1st Book - Bring to class on September 5th!!)
"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain
"The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien

"The War that Saved My Life" by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
