Rebecca Koreis

Hello, my name is Becky Koreis!

Helping ignite a passion for learning in young disciples of Christ is quite the treat for me, and I'm thrilled I get to do so for your awesome students through my favorite subject: American Sign Language!

The Lord put ASL and the Deaf community on my heart 20 years ago when I was moved to learn to communicate with a Deaf couple who used sign language at the restaurant where I waited tables. This rich, beautiful language animated through lively hands, a visual "signing space" and facial expressions, has a way of captivating people of all ages. Not only are signed languages an incredible gift for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, but they can be useful to families with non-verbal children, and open doors for future opportunities for young people.

I studied this language through an excellent ASL and Deaf Studies program at Western Oregon University where I was able to receive valuable training from Deaf teachers and practice often through social immersion into the Deaf community. My experience teaching includes my work as a school paraprofessional, teaching at a preschool, therapy for adults and children with mental health needs, behavioral intervention for kids with developmental disabilities, and remote work as an ESL teacher for foreign students.

I am so grateful the Lord expanded my husband's career in law enforcement and allowed me to be more present at home and pour into my family. My husband and I are big kids at heart and enjoy all kinds of indoor and outdoor adventures with our sons (ages 14 and 7). Throughout the week we spend time fellowshipping with church family and with friends who share our values and encourage our spiritual growth. Some of my other passions are music/leading worship (I play acoustic guitar and sing), baking (mainly sourdough bread), hiking, and water sports of any kind (although owning a watercraft will have to wait a few more years).

My teaching philosophy is compassionate and child-centered, and I take the time to get to know my students so I can cater to their varying learning styles, hurdles, and interests. I believe children learn best when they are uplifted, having fun, challenged, and interested in what they are studying. I balance the creativity and games with expectation for strong character-building, student effort, and problem-solving techniques. I strive to make the classroom an inviting place for students to thrive in and to build skills to take with them out into the world where we are called to impact the hearts of God's children with his truth and love.

I can't wait for this upcoming school year to begin, and admire your dedication to your children's well-being and education!

In His Grace,

Becky Koreis
