Human Anatomy (9-12)

Class Overview

This advanced high school science course is designed to provide students with a deep, college-preparatory understanding of the human body through the study of anatomy and physiology. Using Apologia's Exploring Creation with Advanced Biology: The Human Body, 2nd Edition, students will explore the structure and function of the body's 11 major organ systems—including the skeletal, muscular, nervous (central and peripheral), endocrine, circulatory, lymphatic, digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems—while marveling at God's intricate and purposeful design in creation.

Learning extends far beyond the textbook through engaging dissections, hands-on experiments (both in class and at home), discussions, and critical analysis. The course cultivates independent learning, analytical thinking, and a sense of wonder at the complexity of the human body as fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).

Assessments include module tests, quarterly exams, and lab reports, but with an emphasis on mastery rather than rote memorization. Test preparation often incorporates review games and group activities to build confidence and reduce anxiety. My goal is for students not only to gain a thorough scientific knowledge of human biology but also to develop a profound appreciation for the Creator's intentional design and the miracle of life.

Coursework + Coursework at Home (Homework):

At Ethos Academy, we use a hybrid model, blending in-class instruction with essential weekly at-home coursework for mastery and success.

·         Plan for an average of 3–5 hours per week of homework (more during lab-heavy modules).

·         Some weeks may be lighter (review or reading), while others involve in-depth study questions, lab write-ups, or dissections.

·         Advanced experiments/Lab are geared to be completed in class with only a few unit projects to be done at home.

·         All at-home work is completed in the Exploring Creation with Advanced Biology: The Human Body, 2nd Edition Student Notebook (spiral-bound, designed to guide note-taking, study questions, lab reports, and organization).

Understanding the Curriculum

The textbook presents information in a conversational style, starting with foundational concepts and building to detailed explanations of each organ system. It integrates a biblical worldview, highlighting God's creation throughout.

This is a rigorous, advanced course—students may encounter challenging details, especially in physiology and biochemistry. This is expected and valuable for college preparation. These advanced concepts will be present in the text and covered in the class. They will not be graded heavily on these advanced concepts, however, as the material and course should be accessible even to students who have not completed chemistry (regardless of what the course description says online).

The Student Notebook supports learning by helping students:

·         Capture key concepts and vocabulary

·         Answer "On Your Own" questions and study guides

·         Document labs, dissections, and experiments systematically

·         Stay organized without feeling overwhelmed

On Another Note:

The last unit of the year will likely be on the human body’s reproductive system. We will not be discussing the mechanics of sex. The human reproductive system is an AMAZING miracle, however, and I believe in teaching students how babies are formed from a scientific perspective. Childbearing can feel really taboo to a lot of students. I will be approaching the topic in an effort to reduce that taboo and introduce it as a normal part of life and, perhaps, the most miraculous things about our bodies and God’s design.

That being said: I will give parents an advanced notice of the unit and the freedom to opt their child out of the unit no questions asked.

Advanced biology is cumulative. Not every detail must be mastered immediately for meaningful progress. The course builds a strong foundation in human anatomy and physiology that prepares students for future studies in biology, health sciences, or pre-med tracks. If a concept feels difficult now, it simply means the student is engaging deeply—right where growth happens. What matters most is cultivating curiosity, critical thinking, and confidence as a learner.

I encourage students to ask questions. To see understanding of the system as a whole and to engage with the material as best as they can. Our bodies are the way to live and interact with others and with our own world. Having a clear understanding of how God designed them is crucial in our connection to ourselves and to the world around us.

This course is not Charter Reimbursable.

Classroom Supplies

Please bring the following to every class:

·         The Apologia Student Notebook.

·         Composition book or dedicated lab notebook (for in-class notes, sketches, and lab observations)

·         Loose-leaf paper in a 3-ring binder (for handouts and additional notes)

·         Pencils, pens, and highlighters

·         Colored pencils or markers (for the Kaplan coloring book)

Required Curriculum

·         Apologia Exploring Creation with Advanced Biology: The Human Body, 2nd Edition (Textbook) Available at Christianbook.com or Apologia.com (prices vary; check current listings)

·         Apologia Exploring Creation with Advanced Biology: The Human Body, 2nd Edition (Student Notebook) by Vicki Dincher Christianbook.com (typically around $35–$45; confirm current price)

·         Kaplan Anatomy Coloring book spiral: $25 on Amazon

·         The student test packet is not required.

Payment Information

This two-hour course tuition is $480 per semester, plus a $100 materials fee.

The material fee is to cover all student experiment supplies and hand out printing throughout the semester. I do try to make my courses very interactive to let all learning types have a chance to engage the material. The high material fee enables me to do this with real science experiments. Thank you!

·         The materials fee is collected during registration.

·         The materials fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.

⚠️ Charter Funding Notice: This class includes religious content and is not eligible for charter funding/reimbursement.

Parent Partnership, Student Expectations & Classroom Culture

High school is a key time for developing independence, time management, and academic responsibility. This course supports that growth while relying on strong parent partnership.

Parent Partnership

Parents are invaluable in encouraging consistent study habits, providing a quiet workspace, and communicating support. Please check the Ethos LMS regularly and reach out with any questions—I welcome partnership throughout the year.

Student Responsibility

Students are expected to:

·         Track all reading assignments in class and on the Ethos LMS

·         Complete at-home coursework thoughtfully and on time

·         Prepare for and participate in labs/dissections responsibly

·         Review feedback on tests and labs to improve their understanding.

Clear communication ensures no student is unsure of expectations. Building these habits prepares students for college and beyond.

Classroom Culture & Expectations

The classroom is positive, engaging, and respectful. Discussions are encouraged, but focus remains on learning during instruction. Respect for others, attentiveness, and active participation create an environment where every student can thrive, ask questions freely, and grow in appreciation for God's creation.
