Class Overview

In this engaging history and geography class, students will explore three fascinating topics: Native Americans of North America, the outlaws and lawmen of the Wild West, and the state of Idaho. Through discussions, maps, stories, and activities, students will learn about the people, places, and events that helped shape the American West.

This class serves as a Year 2 continuation of the Western history series. While some students may have taken Oregon Trail, Ghost Towns, and Idaho State History, this course will explore new topics and different historical figures, so it is not a repeat of previously taught material.

Students will begin by studying Native American tribes across North America. We will explore how geography influenced where tribes lived and how they adapted to environments such as forests, plains, deserts, and coastal regions. Students will learn about traditional homes, food sources, tools, cultural traditions, and the unique ways tribes lived in connection with the land.

Next, we will step into the era of the Wild West, examining the lives of famous outlaws and legendary lawmen. Students will learn about figures such as Billy the Kid, Jesse James, Butch Cassidy, Wyatt Earp, and Pat Garrett, while exploring what life was really like in frontier towns. We will also discuss how stories of the West grew over time and learn to separate historical fact from legend.

The class will also focus on Destination Idaho! where students will explore the state’s geography, counties, cities, and important landmarks. Students will learn about Idaho’s mountain ranges, rivers, state parks, historic sites, and unique places to visit while gaining a deeper understanding of what makes the state an important part of the American West.

Through maps, discussions, and interactive activities, students will strengthen their understanding of history and geography while developing curiosity about the cultures, landscapes, and stories that make the American West so unique.

Classroom Culture & Expectations

I aim to create a fun, engaging and focused learning environment in my classroom. A strong learning environment requires students to be respectful of one another and focused during instruction.

This means that when I am speaking or giving directions, students are expected to listen attentively, avoid side conversations, and stay on task. Social time is valued, but it should not take away from learning time.

By working together to keep our classroom focused, respectful, and encouraging, we create a space where every student can learn, feel supported, and grow in their knowledge of history!
