Spelling and Literacy Lab
Class Overview
This class is designed to strengthen students’ reading comprehension, fluency, and spelling skills in a supportive and engaging environment. Throughout the year, students will practice reading aloud, develop stronger comprehension snd inference skills, building the foundation for confident readers.
In reading, we will focus on skills such as making inferences, improving fluency while reading aloud, identifying different genres, and strengthening overall comprehension. Students will learn to think more deeply about what they read and practice expressing their understanding.
Spelling instruction will include a variety of word types. Some weeks will focus on specific spelling rules, while other weeks will focus on commonly misspelled words that students frequently encounter in their writing.
Spelling Structure
Students will receive a weekly spelling list of 10 words plus one bonus word. These words will help reinforce spelling patterns, commonly misspelled words, and foundational spelling skills.
Curriculum
Students will be provided an Explode the Code workbook that matches their spelling ability to work on at home. This curriculum reinforces phonics, decoding, and spelling patterns, helping students strengthen the building blocks needed for confident reading and writing. It is a very simple curriculum, yet one I have seen help many students.

At Home Coursework
At Ethos Academy, we offer core classes through a hybrid learning model, which means students will complete weekly coursework at home in addition to in-class instruction. This work is essential to student success in the course.
Consistent practice at home is essential. Students should practice reading for a minimum of 10 minutes each day. This short daily practice helps build the repetition needed for true fluency and confidence.
Students will also be provided with five printed spelling practice sheets to be completed at home in preparation for a weekly test taken in class. If you would like to be provided with a sample sheet, please contact me at the address below.
