Class Overview
In this exciting history and geography class, students will explore three fascinating topics: Native Americans of North America, the outlaws and lawmen of the Wild West, and the great state of Idaho. Through stories, maps, discussions, and hands-on activities, students will discover the people, places, and adventures that helped shape the American West.
This class serves as a Year 2 continuation of the Western history series. While some students may have taken Oregon Trail, Ghost Towns, and Idaho State History, this course will explore new topics and different historical figures, so it is not a repeat of previously taught material. Year 1 is not required to have been completed to enroll in year 2.
Students will begin by learning about the Native American tribes of North America. We will explore how several different tribes lived across forests, plains, tundra, deserts, and mountains. Students will discover the unique homes they built, the foods they hunted and gathered, the tools they used, and the traditions that were passed down through generations. From Comanche and Sioux to Tlinget and Inuit, students will see how Native Americans from all over the country adapted to the land around them and learn where their territories were located.
Next, we will step into the Wild West, a time filled with cowboys, sheriffs, and outlaws. Students will hear the stories of famous outlaws like Billy the Kid, Jesse James, and Butch Cassidy, along with legendary lawmen such as Wyatt Earp and Pat Garrett. We will explore what life was like in frontier towns and learn the difference between true history and the tall tales that grew over time.
Finally, students will explore the amazing state of Idaho. We will travel across the state discovering towering mountains, rushing rivers, deep canyons, and beautiful forests. Students will learn about Idaho’s counties, cities, and famous landmarks while exploring state parks, historic sites, and fun destinations. From the rugged wilderness to unique places people love to visit, students will see what makes Idaho such an incredible place to live and explore.
Through storytelling, maps, and engaging activities, students will build a stronger understanding of history and geography while developing curiosity about the people, places, and adventures of the American frontier.

Classroom Culture & Expectations
I aim to create a fun, engaging and focused learning environment in my classroom. A strong learning environment requires students to be respectful of one another and focused during instruction.
This means that when I am speaking or giving directions, students are expected to listen attentively, avoid side conversations, and stay on task. Social time is valued, but it should not take away from learning time.
By working together to keep our classroom focused, respectful, and encouraging, we create a space where every student can learn, feel supported, and grow in their knowledge of history!
