Welcome to English Literature: The Stories that Shape us.

OVERVIEW

This course is a high school level course which will explore influential pieces of literature chronologically through American History. We will focus on thinking critically about the themes and ideas represented in the works to understand more deeply the impact on culture and the story claims made on truth. We will utilize the Apologia American Literature Textbook as a framework, but students should be prepared to engage in critical, thoughtful discussion regarding the truth of the work's themes separate from the claims made by the textbook. This is not a read and regurgitate class.

HOMEWORK:

This class will have key reading requirements which students will complete outside of class. It is a project and discussion-based course. Students will be graded on class participation and academic performance on a series of essays and creative writing assignments. Student workbook/questions will be utilized to stimulate discussion but are not the foundation of the student's grade.

CLASSROOM SUPPLIES:

Subject folder or binder to store course documents and any homework sheets.

Pencils/Pens

Course Journal: I recommend a small-ish pocket journal where students will write and collect impactful quotes from the works we read and write entries recording what resonated with them.

REQUIRED CURRICULUM:

The course will require parents purchase Apologia: American Literature 2nd Edition

I recognize that this is a new printing and expensive. A used first edition Might work for the class. Unfortunately, they migrated all their student workbook pages to their online resource and it doesn't look like you can buy the student workbook anymore for the 1st edition (unless it's used...) There are 100 pages less in the 2nd edition vs the 1st so I'm not sure if the edition change will impact student participation in the class material.

You will also need to buy (or check out at the library) 4-5 novels which we will be reading for the class as well (book titles will be published when we get closer to the class). These works will be classic works and likely will be available free/cheap on kindle. I do encourage audiobooks as long as it empowers the student to digest the material in a way they can recall to discuss deeper points and themes in class.

Please note: This class solely focuses on reading, and is not a complete Language Arts curriculum (it does not include specific instruction on grammar, spelling, or writing).  I will be covering some elements of writing, but my focus is on literature and reading elements.  Please consider my Critical Writing Course for writing/language arts focused instruction.

PAYMENT METHODS & SCHEDULE:

This one hour core course tuition is $220/semester plus a $20 material fee/semester.

All class tuition payments are paid directly to Ethos Academy through the Learning Management System upon registration.  Parents will enroll in classes and set up their chosen payment method (either pay in full or monthly) via Bank ACH.  The material fee is collected immediately upfront upon class registration.  The material fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.
