English Literature (7/8)

Overview

This year-long middle school class will cover Literature components of various genres and the characteristic of each genre study. The genres that will be covered in this class are Historical Fiction, Mystery, Adventure Fiction, Fantasy and Biography/Autobiography. Students will read novels of each genre and define the characteristics of each, as well as literary components. Some of the novels will be a quick read, such as Adventure, others will be longer, such as Fantasy. I have vetted all of the novels that the students will be reading. The chosen novels align with our school's ethics and values.

This class will be primarily project based with summaries as well as creative options to demonstrate understanding of content material. Students will have group presentations, as well as opportunities to showcase their work on individual projects. Although the focus will not be on grammar, or components of writing, students will be working through a spelling program.

I am excited to offer a fresh perspective on the various genres and the adventure of each book the students read. I look forward to our year of reading and exploring together!

Homework

Homework will be assigned and required to be complete. All of the content presented will align with charter homeschool programs. The material covered and completed will be able to be submitted as a demonstration of what is being covered and learned by your student. All students work at a different pace, however I would plan about 30 minutes on each homeschool day (M,W,F). I will not be collecting homework, however there will be a check in with each student to ensure that work is completed. Homework is designed to help with the next class project or activity planned in class. Projects will most likely be completed at home, however I will be provide guidance throughout the process.

• 1 composition book

• Loose leaf paper in a three ring binder

• Mechanical pencils with extra lead (no pencil sharpeners, they are messy)

• Colored pencils (no marker please) I will bring in markers for required projects

• 2 Highlighters

• Post-it notes

• 3 Permanent Glue sticks

• Scissors

• Students will be required to read independently at home. Students will be reading a novel in each of the five genres that are going to be covered. The different literary elements will be covered, as well as specific genre elements of each genre.

This one hour course tuition is $240,plus a $15 material fee for copies and supplies per semester. The material fee is collected during the registration period. The material fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.
