Class Description: Oregon Trail, Ghost Towns, and Idaho State History - Grades 1-4

In this exciting and interactive core history class, students will embark on a journey through time to explore the fascinating stories of the Oregon Trail, the mystery of ghost towns, and the rich history of Idaho. Through hands-on activities, storytelling, and engaging discussions, we will uncover the adventures, struggles, and triumphs of pioneers and early settlers.

Students will:

·       Journey the Oregon Trail: Learn about the brave pioneers who traveled the Oregon Trail to build new lives. Students will understand the challenges they faced, such as crossing rivers and facing harsh weather, and the importance of teamwork and perseverance.

·       Explore Ghost Towns: Discover the ghost towns of the American West, including those in Idaho. Students will learn why some towns thrived while others were abandoned, and what remains of these once-bustling communities today.

·       Dive into Idaho’s State History: Explore the history of Idaho from its Native American roots to becoming a state. We will talk about the first explorers, the impact of the gold rush, and the development of communities. Students will also learn about Idaho’s famous landmarks, animals, and important historical figures.

·       Hands-On Activities: From creating dioramas to mapping out the Oregon Trail, students will experience history through projects, stories, and art that bring the past to life.

By the end of the year, students will have a deeper understanding of the history of the American West and Idaho, and will gain an appreciation for the courage and determination of those who shaped the land we know today.

Assessment: Assessment will be based on participation, effort, and the development in each student’s work.

For students enrolled in a program like Overture, this course will cover History, Geography, Economics, Civics/Government, and Global Perspectives.
